(a note from her son)
The year 2020 would have been the one hundredth birthday of my mother, Shirley Plaut Schaefer. It is with great happiness that I’ve been able to create this website as a tribute to her and her art.
When she married Dr. George Schaefer in 1944, I’m sure she realized that becoming a wife and a mother would have an effect on her career in art. She left the world of commercial art and focused on fine art, turning the third floor of their house in Queens into a studio. I am the older of their two sons, born in 1950, and grew up used to the smell of turpentine and her requests for help in stretching canvasses. Her style and media changed over the years, but her dedication to art never wavered. The 250 works included on this website, loosely organized by theme, celebrate her range and her talent. I’ve noted the approximate dimensions of each piece, and can provide more information to those who are interested in acquiring these or other pieces.
